Meaningful Employment Is a Cornerstone of Recovery

As the United States continues to be challenged by substance use disorder, the latest research shows that a key component of maintaining recovery is meaningful employment. Yet the workplace has been slow to address how it can support employees who are in recovery, or in need of it.

A Workplace Can Change the Course of Recovery

Substance use disorder is a chronic, treatable health condition affecting millions of workers. Employers are uniquely positioned to help.

The Challenge

Despite substance use disorder being a chronic, life-threatening condition, people affected by it may not be supported by their employers the same way as employees facing other chronic health conditions.

The Movement

A grassroots movement of employers, advocates, elected officials, and service providers has joined forces, backed by the White House, to promote recovery in the workplace nationwide.

A National Initiative to Make Every Workplace Recovery Friendly

A Recovery Friendly Workplace is a place of work where the employer, in collaboration with employees, establishes, maintains, and continually enhances policies, practices, and a culture that support current and prospective employees in recovery from — or otherwise affected by — substance use disorders.

Global Recovery Initiatives Foundation (GRI), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, launched the National Recovery Friendly Workplace Institute — the first national public- and private-sector initiative whose mission is to help equip every employer to be a Recovery Friendly Workplace. Its formation was announced at a formal White House press briefing, and it is the only body that Nationally Certifies employers as Recovery Friendly Workplaces.
